Carol Schoenauer, Switzerland

What to wear in Bariloche

The first thing you need to consider is WHAT you will be doing when you get to Bariloche, the climate (which is very changeable, specially in spring) and how long you will stay  here.

If your plans are just getting around, enjoying the sceneries and seeing the country you travel to, you can wear casual, comfortable clothing.
No matter the time of the year, the key when travelling to Patagonia is light but warm and waterproof clothing. The wind in Patagonia is always cold and, even in summer, nights are chilly.
Comfortable shoes to walk long distances are mandatory and a good hat is always welcome. Sun-block is very important as well as checking every day for UV indications. But do not worry too much, Bariloche offers a wide range of shops and rentals where you can get mountaineering equipment.

And children also learn through seeing and hearing. - At La Montaña, we offer a variety of experiences to help your child develop new strengths and interests that will broaden his or her understanding of the world while learning a new language... Children prefer activities or projects that allow them to use their hands and for them we have developed Spanish and Art for children. Together with Gabriela Herrera, our Art consultant, we offer: Spanish lessons in the morning and Art sessions in the afternoon once or twice a week.

The Spanish instruction is wonderful

"Veronica runs a fantastic program at "Spanish in Bariloche.  The Spanish instruction is wonderful but, on top of that, she and her team also do so much more! Her school is terrific and the teachers are excellent. However, the big bonus for me was that she helped us organize our trip and also helped us find a place to stay and things to do while we were there. If Veronica had not been so instrumental in helping us get organized, we probably would not have gone to Bariloche and would have missed out on amazing hikes and nature, wonderful food, excellent spanish instruction and a wonderful summer camp.
My three boys (3, 8 and 10 years old) loved the classes and activities and learned so much and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring all that Bariloche has to offer. Veronica is a sweetheart and a delight to work with and know.  I can't recommend her highly enough."

Liz Pola, San Francisco.

It is a great enthusiastic Spanish School

"I went to Veronica's Spanish School, SpanishinBariloche. In SpanishinBariloche, Veronica tries to get her students to learn in different ways. We don't just sit in a classroom going over imperfect verbs. We do fun things like taking a cooking class or a salsa lesson. My favorite was when my family and I went to La Granja (The farm). It was a wonderful experience to see what a farm in Argentina is like. It was also a great place to try argentine customs, like mate. Mate is a very strong tea that looks like spinach in a a goard. At the granja, you also get to milk cows, feed pigs, chase sheep, plant in the garden, make cheese or dulce de leche, and have a conversation with Cris and Alex (the owners of the farm) in Spanish. I love the way Veronica has taken teaching Spanish to a fun, new level."

Carter Ware, EEUU, Age 12.

"Hello, my name is Roxie and I was a student at this school "Spanish in Bariloche. It is a great enthusiastic Spanish School. My teacher was a funny, nice, active person that was always ready to play lots of games. One of my favorite things we did was the play "Hansel and Gretel". I was Gretel, the mom, the dad and the squirrel that they meet in the forest. Carter, my sister, was the witch, the rat in the forest and Hansel. Our teacher helped out setting it up and making the characters. We played it for our parents and the other teachers. It was sad to see our teacher leave on our last day because we had so much fun!"

Roxie Ware, EEUU, Age 10.

"Veronica has done a great job of working with us and meeting our varied educational needs."

Latane Ware, EEUU.

Last family testimonial

"The combination of clsses in the morning and activities in the afternoon make for an enjoyable and intensive learning experience. The instructors are patient and kind. The learning is balanced between speaking, listening, writing and reading. The director is exceptionally helpful and accomodating. The total experience was most excellent. I can not imagine better!"
Carl Spetzler, EEUU

"The classes and team at Las Montaña were excellent. I started with only a few survival phrases and words, by the end of the month I was able to have conversations. I now have a solid foundation in Spanish to support my travels and continued studies. Thank you to everyone at La Montaña."
Joanna Fry, EEUU

"I loved it. It was perfect for me, a younger person. If you do not feel right, there is a bed for you to sleep on, lots of very fun activities. I started with hola and now I'm able to keep a conversation with other kids! It is an amazing place, the bus can get anoying but it is OVERALL more than AMAZING!"

Student Stories... Alex and Kylah, Australia

Alex and Kylah are traveling around South America with their 9 months old son. They took classes with La Montaña and we designed for them a program that would work best for their family needs!

"My partner and I contacted La Montaña after we arrived to Bariloche to take some lessons we wanted to start mid week, take separate lessons as we were at different levels, and organise a baby sitter. "La Montaña" were very accommodating as we changed to private lessons in order to work around our son's sleeping times, etc. The classes were very good with little revision quickly worked through, good amount of homework and the private lessons were able to be tailored around our own needs with what we wanted to learn."
Alec Norman, Australia

"The teachers were great. Very good at explaining new things and going faster or slower when necessary. We really appreciated the help and flexibility to have classes that worked around Oliver's (our son) schedule! Gracias!"
Kylah Morrison, Australia

"Stuff I can use right away every day..."

"Teachers were very patient and helpful. La Montaña school was in safe convenient location. Material was very relevant, stuff I can use right away every day. I liked the games and presentation. It was helpful to switch off teachers, so I could get used  to different accents. Also liked the options for activieties in afternoon.
Thanks for starting my trip off right!"

5 Cervecerías near La Montaña

After your Spanish lessons, it is nice to relax and practice with fellow students while tasting a craft beer in one of the several (almost 15) local micro breweries. These have been producing micro-brewed beer in Bariloche for a long time, but specially during the last 10 years many new micro breweries run by young enthusiastic “barilochenses” have been opened.

1. Manush: Located in a small old house in Bariloche, is the place to sample the line of craft beer made in Bariloche. There are a variety of cuisine to accompany the beer.
2. Berlina: Berlina's stout (dark beer) is highly praised by the most demanding beer sommeliers. However, this privilege is also enjoyed by two other varieties: Munich and India. The three of them make up a trilogy.
3. Antares: Antares is present in Bariloche with the branch factory marplatense Brew.
4. Konna: It is a cozy, easy going pub   poplular with the locals.
5. Bachmann: A small factory Brew. The local cuisine pizzas and snacks.

Spanish programs for families

I am from Argentina but married a US citizen with very little fluency in Spanish which is why our kids (10 and 14) never spoke my language much. I sent them to La Montaña hoping they could make up for lost time. The results were amazing!

I was concerned that they would miss us (they were gone for little over a month) and be upset that we sent them to school on their summer break. Both were unfounded. The first class they had they came back so excited and said it was so much fun and the classes were catered to each of their interests and they remained engaged for the duration.

Liam came back fluent (some errors on tenses and gender of words) but fluent! He didn’t speak more than a few words when he left and placed on Spanish 3-4 honors! More importantly I can now speak to my kid in my language and he understands what I say. Almost brought tears to my eyes.

Nick (10) came back less fluent than Liam (he is less daring to say something if he isn’t sure it will be accurate) but understands when I speak and I can’t wait for him to continue learning. What he learned surprised me as well as he is a tricky learner.

Veronica went way above and beyond by organizing their stay with a great couple!  Adapting her classes so that our kids could go to ski team, helping us organize a car service for this effort, pick-up, drop-offs, things completely outside the scope of the school. She made this whole experience one that I hope to be able to repeat and would be happy to talk and highly recommend to anyone who is planning on doing this.

Thanks,

Liz

Thank you all very much!!

"I had a fantastic experience with La Montaña. I learned
a lot more than I expected, and enjoyed myself thoroughly while doing so. The teachers are amazing and very helpful. Within a few days I was having conversations and understanding much of what was said to me by Spanish speaking locals. I would reccomend La Montaña to ANYone wanting to learn Spanish and explore the city of Bariloche."

Zachary Spetzler, EEUU

TIP 8: Label the objects you have around

The more you see one word the faster you will memorize it. You can get a pad of sticky notes and label common objects at home. Every time you go near a labeled item repeat that word out loud. You will never forget important words like "el baño" or “la sal” again.

Founded in 2002, La Montaña is the leading Spanish School in Patagonia Argentina. It is located in a quiet spot, but in the heart of the city, just one block from main bus stop, near internet cafes, restaurants and all the services you might need; next to Nahuel Huapi lake, just a few meters from the Tourist Information Office at Centro Civico, the main city square, where town hall and the most important museum in Patagonia is placed.

Students have plenty of time to communicate amongst themselves during coffee breaks, cultural or outdoor activities and often enjoy going out into the town together to practice their spanish language skills.

Magnificent program and magnificent instruction...

"I'm extremely satisfied with the complete experience of learning Spanish at La Montaña and living in Bariloche. I very much appreciated the ability to take lessons from different professors from different locales, with different dialects and experiences. I believe this was very beneficial to my understanding of not only the Spanish language, but the culture and mentality. All of the professors were extremely talented and contributed greatly to my learning. All were very flexible and willing to adapt my non-standard request/program needs. Overall; magnificent program and magnificent instruction from the best professors!!"

TIP 7: Make Spanish part of your everyday life:

Switch your computer, google preferences, cell phone and other electronics into Spanish. It might be difficult at first, but you’ll maximize your time learning new words and phrases when you are using (needing) them.

Start writing your diary or blog in Spanish... little by little you will be able to express more clearly. Ask some native Spanish speakers to help you with corrections and edition.

Do you play an instrument or sing? Learn a song in Spanish to practice pronunciation. Do not worry about the meaning of each and every word of the lyrics. If you can get the global idea, it is enough.

Do you like cooking? Subscribe to cooking websites in Spanish and learn new vocabulary as well as expressions. It will be both, fun, useful and your family/friends will be greatful!!

What is a Spanish lessons week like?

First day of lessons: Before arriving in Bariloche students may wonder... What is a tipical week like at La Montaña?

Students who have applied for lessons in a group will normally have a placement test online beforehand, but we might make some adjustments once we meet in person, if necessary. Monday at 9:00am is the time lessons start, but it is nice if students come around 8:45 to share a coffee and meet other students and La Montaña Team. By 10:30  we will know if any adjustments for groups levels is needed. After first day, or at any point during schooling, if students feel the group doesn’t suit expectations or if extra help is needed, Director or  teachers coordinator will take care about this. Students can always change into another group or have additional private lessons. If  group lessons have been booked and there is no suitable group, student will have 2 hrs private lessons a day with no extra cost.
Schedules:
Our school runs from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. Mostly, lessons in a group take place during the morning from 9:00 to 1:00 pm. We have one break during the morning, when students can meet new friends from different Spanish courses.

Private lessons take place mostly in the afternoon and evenings, however, if these schedules do not suit students timetables, we can review times. There are hours available on request on Saturday mornings, as well. We are flexible, provided that we can fulfill our commitments with all our students.
After-class activities:
2 or 3 times per week, La Montaña organizes after-school activities. These can be Cultural or outdoor, depending on the weather. List of possible choices:
  City Tour + chocolaterias
  Cooking lessons
  Trekking to Cerro Campanario
Trekking to Cascada de Los  Duendes
  International potlucks
  Guided visit to Bariloche´s clock
