Experience Patagonia like a local with your family for a long term

Our long-term family program to learn Spanish language at La Montaña involves immersing your family in Spanish language and culture. That is the reason why we call it "Experience Patagonia as a local.

While you and your family stay in Patagonia, you can combine structured lessons and cultural immersion together with experiencing the area as a localThis approach allows for significant language acquisition through daily interaction and practical application, offering a more effective and enriching experience than traditional classroom learning.

Winter Spanish Programs in Patagonia for families

When travelling abroad with young kids, there are many new specific challenges parents will have to face. At La Montaña Spanish School we design tailor-made programs to match each family's profile with the experiences available.

We have been organizing such programs since 2002, making the most for the family experience. We work closely together with parents to suit each member's need and backgrounds.

In our experience, Private lessons are better for families as we will have more flexibility. There is also a chance for group lessons, but we start with a Private lessons base and keep the family informed about any chance to move to group lessons.

Winter, in particular, has more factors to take into account. If you would like to take some days for skiing and/or exploring, in our experience, when family travels with young kids we need to consider a few important factors:

  • the specific needs for the young kids
  • Daylight (from 9 am to 6pm)
  • the dynamics (traffic and state of the roads) of the city of Bariloche during high season (usually quite chaotic)
So, the best time to leave home and start exploring and enjoying the area is from 9 am and return to the city by 5 pm. It is also important to consider that (depending on the traffic)  it might take at least a 1 or 1:30 hours  for transportation each time. For example, the ski resort is only 15 km from the town center but the long lines might make it a 1:30 hour ride.
Therefore, my advice is to explore and enjoy during your free days, in the morning and afternoon. Maybe, if you are planning to ski every day you could have your lessons in the late afternoon, starting by 5:00 or 5:30 for example and finishing at 7:00 or 7:30 pm.
Here, you will find a couple of links and information that could be interesting for you:
Ski passes prices and purchases on this website https://tienda.catedralaltapatagonia.com/es/tienda/
Ski gear rental: you can check online the prices... maybe you would rather bring your own ski gear.
Public transportation: there is a public bus (number 55) every hour leaving town and reaching the ski resort. The cost at the moment (July 2025) is about $7 dollars per person each ride. Public transportation is good but it might be subject to delays or cancellations. You can also visit by bus other interesting sightseeing or trekking points in the outskirts of the city.
Car rental: Definitely my advice for a family with kids. Very useful and practical. However, it might be quite expensive in the high season. When you do your research, contact us to help finding the best budget. Some rentals can offer very good deals for our students  (you will need to mention that you will be a student at La Montaña)
