Bariloche Day Trips

Bariloche Day Trips

By Carlye Goldman, July 2019.

After you’ve worked hard taking Spanish lessons in Bariloche, and you are looking for more activities and places to explore, you can take a well-deserved day trip to see more of Patagonia, Argentina. There are a variety places you can explore and continue to practice your Spanish while doing so.

To begin, a trip worth taking during any time of the year, but you’ll experience a Narnia-like feel if you go in the winter is Cerro Tronador. Tronador is Bariloche’s tallest mountain, and gets its name from the sound breaking ice glaciers make. This black-glacier is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking views you will witness, and is the perfect day trip to take after you finish your Spanish course week(s).

Volunteer in Patagonia

At La Montaña we are proud to develop volunteer and internship oportunities, making a positive impact on our community while helping people form different cultures to meet and learn from eachother.

Volunteering quick facts:
REQUIRED SPANISH LEVEL: Depends on project, but all levels are welcome from A1+
START DAY: Any Monday
DURATION: 2 to 24 weeks.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: average 15 hours per week.
SPANISH CLASSES: 2 weeks Spanish classes required*
LOCATION: Patagonia. Within Bariloche area

Sample Volunteer week:
Mornings: Spanish lessons
Afternoons: Cultural activities 3 times per week + Volunteering 2 or 3 times per week.

* Why two weeks Spanish lessons are required?
The minimum Spanish level required is A1+ and maybe you are already there. However, speaking in real life could be harder than what you are used to consider “Speaking Spanish” in a class with your teacher. In real life you will meet people who will speak faster, not so clear and conversation will be about very specific subjects. This is the reason why volunteers need a two weeks Spanish training in order to improve speaking and listening skills as well as specific topics about the volunteer project (in Spanish of course!)

1) Environmental project: https://www.lamontana.com/learn-spanish-bariloche/blog/245-travel-with-a-purpose-volunteer-in-patagonia

Why volunteering in Environmental project?

Give back to the community while improving your Spanish skills
Take part in ecological conservation, recycling and environmental projects.
Make a positive impact on community.
Dedicate your time to organizations helping in social and environmental projects.

2) Marketing and Social Media/researcher: (also included as an Internship)

Why volunteering in Social Media/Research?

La Montaña supports and creates opportunities for volunteers since 2002. This mission has been developed by and for La Montaña students.
Be the eyes and ears for La Montaña while improving your Spanish skills.
Help La Montaña spreading out the word while learning about how social and environmental organizations work in Argentina.
Monitor existing projects and help improving.
Create new networks and new volunteer opportunities for prospective volunteers.
Research for new options for fundings in order to support social and environmental projects.
Update existing information to make it more appealing for volunteers and donations.

Extra benefit: Marketing and Social Media/researchers get a special discount on Spanish lessons.

So, why did you decide to make the leap and study Spanish in the first place? If you are someone who wants to not only learn Spanish but travel with a purpose, then La Montaña can provide you with the perfect opportunity to become immersed in intentional travel.

While learning Spanish and experiencing the beautiful nature of Bariloche, there are opportunities in which you can become involved to further practice your Spanish and help the community and environment.

(Bariloche’s Recyclers Association)

La Montaña’s ideals
~Vision: to become more
environmentally aware to combat
excessive waste

~Mission: to collect waste that is
then recovered to be sent to
Buenos Aires and recycled
Bariloche’s Recyclers Association is a driven, environmental organization that seeks and welcomes the engagement from La Montañas’ volunteers who are passionate and motivated to make an impact.

When you decide that traveling with a purpose is the route you wish to take, getting involved with La Montaña’s volunteer work mission is an excellent way to pursue this.

This includes tasks carried out by volunteers:

Experience in an environmental project
Practicing Spanish in a cultural immersion
Gaining contacts in a new community as well as meeting new people (partnering with hostels, companies, schools, and discovering ways to help with transportation of recycled goods)

La Montaña is a “green” school and is involved in enhancing social and environmental responsibilities in the community. You will become a participant in spreading the word of the importance to make an impact on our environment through purposeful and meaningful service.

Here is a little more information about Bariloche’s Recyclers Association, so you can begin to think about your volunteer project and make an impact.

You separate the waste at home, your company or your work. Then we recover that waste and they are sent on their way to Buenos Aires to be recycled!

How can we help to take better care of our planet?
First, we can start by reducing the amount of garbage that you generate

Separate your waste, especially the dry products

Try to use reusable containers

Bring a reusable bag with you to the grocery store

Prevent animals from breaking your bags

Lastly, you can join the campaign “vehicle for recyclers,” which is used for collection in companies and neighborhood associations

You can purchase bags for recycling purposes

How to get cash in Bariloche at affordable fees.

Before you visit a new country, it is important to know the rules for the local trade.

As you may know, paying cash opens the possibility of getting very interesting discounts in Argentina.
Because of the very high ATMs fees, most of our students struggle to obtain discounts and end up paying high rates with credit cards.
There are many different ways to get cash in Argentina avoiding the excessive ATMs fees. In Bariloche there is a good net of money transfer services you can choose from.
One interesting option is sending money to yourself, so you will have enough cash to pay different services at very affordable price. You need to check beforehand how much you will pay for transfer fee with each company and compare to the 10% up to 20% fees the ATMs might charge.

How to choose the best Spanish School for me

  1. Decide what is your favorite location in the world where you would like to enjoy your time while having Spanish lessons.
  2. Do some research and find out what are the options concerning Spanish Schools available in your chosen place.
  3. Make sure the websites you visit are really Spanish Schools and in case you notice it is an agent, try to find the website for the real school.
  4. Try to contact former students, or check first hand opinions about your chosen Spanish School. Most of them have some testimonials on FBK, Tripadvisor, Google, etc.
  5. Make sure posts on FBK, Tripadvisor, Google, Instagram, etc. are recent... sometimes they have ages!
  6. If you are alredy on site, it is a good idea to go in person to check the Spanish School.
  7. Ask about the teaching method, philosophy, number of students per class, extra curricular activities, volunteer projects or/and internships and make sure these match your interests and needs.
  8. Explore the options they offer for accommodation, such as homestays, hostels, etc.
  9. Compare the prices for Spanish courses with other Spanish Schools. Make sure you compare similar products. For example, some schools offer 25 hours per week but each hour is 45 minutes, while other schools offer 20 hours per week and each hour is 55 minutes.
  10. Follow your instincs, if you liked at first sigh, you might like it later.
